The Rooster Davis Group With Ann Vriend (AV)

This dynamic show is an energetic mix of original soul in the classic style, fronted by international award winning singer-songwriter AV (Ann Vriend), and New Orleans piano-based blues, led by virtuosic piano man "Rooster Davis."  The award-winning Rooster Davis Group (RDG) has been AV's backing band for the past 3 years-- while in turn Vriend is a member of the RDG, sharing lead vocal duties with Rooster Davis, and playing a mean tambourine.  Since Vriend and Rooster Davis have been regularly featuring each other in their respective shows the natural progression is now they are officially presenting an incredibly dynamic combination performance of their best respective material, with acclaimed drummer Peter Hendrickson and Edmonton's top trombonist Audrey Ochoa as the other 2 members of this talented supergroup.  Their showcases at the 2017 Toronto Blues Summit and the 2016 Alberta Showcase has landed them multiple blues and jazz festivals in Canada, as well as In Australia they were selected as one of the top 15 live acts out of 150 to see at Big Sound (Australia's largest music industry festival), while last October the group's performance at the regional Memphis Blues Challenge won them first prize, as well as the award for "Best Independent Blues Album of the Year."  In Memphis itself the RDG came within less than a percentage point of making it to the finals at the International Memphis Blues Challenge, with all but one judge on multiple performance nights giving them 9/10 and 10/10, while AV picked up the Cobalt Music Prize at the Maple Blues Awards this year for her song "All That I Can," and is also nominated for "Female Artist of the Year" at the upcoming Edmonton Music Awards.  Needless to say, the RDG is rapidly gaining momentum in North America and abroad, and are the perfect band to bring the sound of NOLA and original soul to live music lovers.

** when touring Australia drummer Terepai Richmond (Directions in Groove (DIG), the Whitlams, currently touring with Rodriguez, etc) is the drummer for the RDG in substitution for Peter Hendrickson.

Ann Vriend

Obscure Magazine (NYC) might have put it best when they wrote: “With her soaring vocals, impressive songwriting ability, and instrumental prowess, Vriend is truly an all-in-one package."

Indeed, Vriend's vocal prowess draws continual comparisons to the greats Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton simultaneously; her live show won her the nation-wide “She's the One” contest at the Ottawa Bluesfest; her songs have enjoyed radio play on 3 continents; and to boot she is “a very, very, funny woman that tends to belt out her songs in between her most entertaining comedic intervals” (A n E Vibe Magazine). Independently Vriend has sold more than 16,000 CDs off the stage, and recently signed with Toronto based label Aporia Records.

Or maybe the Vernon Folk Review said it best:

Ann Vriend’s unique blend of raw emotion and groove, along with a voice that can give a person goosebumps and make you want to cry at the same time, was enough to ensure the audience’s desire for an extended encore before she had even finished her first song.

"Vriend’s performance was overflowing with passionate impact that simply left no room for anything but amazement. The intensity of Ann’s mature voice, as bluesy and smoky as a New Orleans jazz club, had the audience holding their breath and forming those round O’s of astonishment early on. Vriend claims Aretha Franklin as a vocal inspiration, and clearly the young performer does not have far to go in closing the gap when comparing her to the legendary blues singer, that assures her the title of “Sweetheart of Canadian Blues” should she ever wish to have the tag name."

Rooster Davis

In addition to leading and fronting the Rooster Davis Group, Rooster Davis (a.k.a. David Aide) is a veteran freelance keyboard player, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Music as well as a performance diploma in piano from Grant MacEwan University. He has recorded with producers such as 10 time Grammy Award winner Joe Chiccarelli, John Whynot, Hawksley Workman, and many local Edmonton producers. He is the musical director of gold platinum selling country artist Adam Gregory, and Rooster also regularly performs with award-winning roots artists such as Ridley Bent, The Dungarees, Jay Sparrow, Jay Gilday, and many more.

Rooster Davis has been focusing on New Orleans piano music for the past 7 years, having studied in NOLA with Tom McDermott and Joe Krown, who are considered 2 of the best contemporary piano players of the New Orleans style. In the short 3 years since the Rooster Davis Group's first performance the band has shared the stage with 2016 Grammy Award winner Jon Cleary, acclaimed NOLA artist Aurora Nealand, Joe Galindo (musical director of Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding), Brad Shigeta (a 17 year member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra), and many others besides.  His album has already garnered play on blues stations across North America, and across the pond in Europe.  It is only a matter of time before he is a staple in the Canadian blues scene and beyond.
